An Astrologer Breaks Down How to Check In With Your Moon
From new moon intentions to full moon house cleanings, ZORA’s resident astrologer Ashleigh D. Jay answers all the questions about our closest planetary neighbor

The wolf moon. The pink moon. The harvest moon. The blood orange moon. It seems that every other month, there is a supermoon in the sky, and a hundred things you are supposed to declutter, call in, or scrub out before Luna loses its luster.
These natal to-do lists vary by ethnic cultures, but pop culture ritual is clear: The moon is significant. Still. We have questions. And ZORA’s resident astrologer Ashleigh D. Jay has answers. The moon represents our emotions, she says. Every time the moon changes phase and enters or exits astrological signs presents an opportunity to check in with yourself.
She suggests that readers follow the moon as it changes signs or phases and then take note of what they’re doing or how they feel at that moment. Eventually a pattern emerges.
“It represents how we nourish ourselves and what makes us feel comfortable and secure,” says Jay. “It represents our relationship to our mother. The moon is the closest celestial body to our planet and it has an effect on everything from the tides to even our menstrual cycles. The moon has an effect on so many different things in our world, it would be silly of us to think it somehow doesn’t mean anything or affect us.”
“Astrology can be informative but you also have to be mindful of handing over your inner work to something else. Astrology doesn’t relieve you of that sense of divine accountability.”
ZORA: Let’s start with the new moon — that point when the sky is dark and you can barely see the outline of Earth’s closest satellite. Why are we setting intentions with the new moon? Do we have to?
