The internet either loved or hated the Vogue cover featuring Vice President Kamala Harris rocking a suit and her favorite pair of Chucks. Regardless of where you stand on that debate, for many viewers at home watching the inauguration, it seems that pearls and Chucks are the uniform of the day. As the morning unfolded, various forms of the hashtag #pearlsandchucks2021 or #chucksandpearls showed up on the socials, and bedazzled T-shirts and sweaters, strings of pearls, custom Chucks, and entire outfits showed out.

For many, in place of an inaugural ball, they rocked inaugural outfits. And this makes sense. Many viewers are working from home and some who ordinarily would have had an invite to a ball or to the ceremony itself are now on the sidelines. Outside of sending good thoughts, prayers, and positive energy to the incoming leaders of America, they are adding a layer of go-go energy by adding specific clothes. Today is an “event” worthy of a special ’fit.
