MMoonrakers 2020 features 10 of the most influential women of color in 2020. Radio personality and entrepreneur Angela Yee is one of them. And while it’s clear that Oprah may still rule the world of media, it’s also quite evident that its future belongs to Angela Yee. And, check this: She even brought us a power playlist. Color Farm’s Erika Alexander recently sat down with Yee for an intimate chat.

Erika Alexander: Angela you’re young, experienced, have major street cred, and you’ve earned your spot on the iconic syndicated radio show, “The Breakfast Club.” We all know breaking through is hard, but being relevant is damn near impossible. Tell us, what do you think of the new media landscape?

Angela Yee: People want news immediately. There’s a lot of competition out there and sometimes it takes away credibility because a lot of people want to be first. With social media, it’s beneficial for people to be able to speak directly to their audience; but on the other hand, sometimes it’s hard for us to separate fact from fiction.

It used to be an interview gets done, that information gets posted, and you go to credible news sources. Now people are consuming things in short form. And people like to look at clips; that’s what social media is all about. It’s quick, it’s a certain amount of characters. But sometimes, when you take things out of context, it doesn’t tell the whole story. So it’s really up to us, as individuals, to do more research than we had to do in the past.

Who is your audience?

People who want to be informed on what’s going on in the world. I travel a lot and all different kinds of people come up to me…

I’ve been in this entertainment game since film was cellulose & sound was vinyl. I’m not just flesh blood n’ bone anymore, I’m words n’ story. I’m mythological.
