Politics

It’s hard — sometimes deadly — to break up with a bad actor, but we have to

“I thought I was going to die.”

When Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez uttered those words on her Instagram Live last week, it immediately invoked the once unthinkable scene of our Capitol building under siege by White domestic terrorists. As the world watched the images of violence and terror unfold, Ocasio-Cortez was living through it—hiding in a bathroom, holding her breath, and hoping to God that she wouldn’t be found by the people hunting her.

American carnage. This is the America Trump and his sycophants delivered on January 6, 2021.

As a result of the insurrection, five people died and others were…

This new legislation would examine slavery and institutional racism

As protesters across America march, shout, and kneel to demand an end to police brutality, and as the land of the free and the home of the brave grapples with racism, some believe the truth could set this nation free.

That’s the spirit behind new legislation that Rep. Barbara Lee of California has unveiled, calling for the establishment of the first United States Commission on Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation. Back in 1996, the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established post-apartheid. …

Facebook is responsible for much misinformation and violence around the world, and the women of color held its founder accountable

House Financial Services Committee Chair Maxine Waters (D-CA) talks with Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg

In April, when Mark Zuckerberg testified before the Senate, it became crystal clear just how out of touch and out of step members were with regard to Facebook and how it actually functions. Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) said to Zuckerberg, seemingly impressed with himself, that he was the first member who had his “Facebook address” printed on his business cards. Zuckerberg, 35, made the Senators, whose average age in the joint committee is 62 years old (with the chair-people in their eighties), seem like a bunch of dinosaurs.

However, when Zuckerberg trekked back to Capitol Hill last week to testify…

Jessica Cisneros, 26, hopes to unseat Henry Cuellar (D-Texas)

Jessica Cisneros and Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) are not strangers to one another. In 2014, Cisneros was an intern in Cuellar’s Washington, D.C., office as an undergraduate student at the University of Texas, Austin. She remembers being one of just a few people who were from Texas’ 28th District. Fewer than half of the people in the office were people of color.

People were taking notice of her ambition even as an intern. …

Recent attacks on Representatives Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Pressley, and Tlaib point to a more sinister right-wing agenda

President Trump set off a viral firestorm when he called for members of “the Squad” (first-year Democratic congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan — all of whom are U.S. citizens, three of whom are U.S. born) to “go back” to the countries they came from. Representative Omar put it best: “He’s launching a blatantly racist attack on four duly elected members of the United States House of Representatives, all of whom are women of color.” Even a few members of the GOP condemned Trump’s statement as racist…
