“Life’s too short to spend time trying to explain the obvious to an idiot.” — Gloria Naylor, author

If you’re an opinionated woman or non-binary person of color with a social media profile, you will realize soon enough that your words and sometimes your life is often fodder for trolls, narcissists, and ill-intentioned people alike. Unfortunately there are people out there who do not desire honest and open conversation but rather they crave to get a rise out of you, to stretch you to your absolute mental limit as a power play.

Life is too short, beloved. There are people who will never get where you are coming from because they are not approaching you in good faith. We also have to be careful as people of color not to overextend ourselves and our labor when we do not benefit as well. You will run yourself ragged trying to convince fools of your standpoint. Instead, it is best to live your life, be open to guidance and accountability, and your people will find you.

ZORA readers, has there been a situation where you spent too much time explaining and found yourself on the road to nowhere with the listener? #ZORACheckIn
