Twenty-five years after the death of singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez, she continues to be remembered for her impact in the music industry and in Latinx culture. Netflix recently released a limited series about the Tejano singer’s life but they’re not the first to memorialize her.

“In the quarter-century since the artist’s untimely death, the queen of Tejano music — a genre that originated at the Texas-Mexico border — has been honored in many ways,” Lola Méndez writes for ZORA. “Through films, music, artwork, museums, murals, and brand collaborations, la reina’s legacy continues to live on beyond the tragedy that took her life, keeping her songs and alma in the hearts of new and old fans alike.”

Selena was tragically killed in 1995 but she continues to live on through the memory of old fans who grew up listening to her hits, and new fans all over the globe who have come to see her as an inspiration.

“‘If you have a dream, don’t let anybody take it away. Always believe that the impossible is always possible,’ Selena said, and fans are still dreaming of Selena and keeping her memory alive. As her fans say, anything for Selenas! Selena’s candle continues to burn brightly. Twenty-five years after her passing, her persona is bigger than ever.”
