Music is a universal language used since the beginning of time to heal, invoke, celebrate, connect and so much more. Music is also an energy exchange, and for many listeners, the vibrations of songs often go overlooked. Different keys align with different chakras (or energy centers) in our bodies just as different frequencies, lyrics, instruments awaken different emotions. Song enriches us, and this week we’re invited to explore our relationship with music, reflecting on how what we listen to, sing, and chant can compliment our experiences.

Pursue new pathways of musical expression this week, whether you’re choosing to get your karaoke on, listening to a new genre of music, or pursuing your interest in musical therapy. You might also feel called to investigate the music you’ve been listening to lately, though the production may be mesmerizing, can you resonate with the lyrics? Does it align with your values? How does it impact your emotional, mental, spiritual or physical wellness?

As a Black woman who grew up with hip-hop and R&B blasting through the speakers at all times, it can be exhausting to be a part of a culture that also, in many cases, abuses, overlooks, or disrespects you. It can be tricky to navigate through loving the music because it serenades my hips, but in the same breath praises negativity or low-vibrational activity. It’s hard to accept these nuances that come with parts of your life that are embedded in your lifestyle but may contradict your core values. I am personally exploring that balance between enjoying the music for ‘fun’ or because it sets the vibe while creating energetic boundaries to ensure I’m not internalizing the messages that don’t resonate. With that comes a lot of bypassing some of the lyrics. Now, maybe this isn’t the healthiest way of going about it but I’m human and love trap music so that’s just something I don’t see myself releasing any time soon because it’s a part of who I am.
