Keepin’ It 100
A historic Vogue cover and a dreamy collab, Black women are keeping it 100 this week!
We’re ranking current events on a scale of 0 to 100! Who kept it 100 this week?
Amanda Gorman makes history on the cover of Vogue magazine 💯/💯
Inauguration poet Amanda Gorman has made history yet again as the first poet to ever be featured on the cover of the prestigious Vogue magazine’s May 2021 issue and little sis looks STUNNING! What’s more, she has some amazing things to say. “I’ve learned that it’s OK to be afraid,” Gorman told the magazine. “And what’s more, it’s OK to seek greatness. That does not make me a black hole seeking attention. It makes me a supernova.”
Tabitha Brown is putting us to sleep with an all new partnership (and it’s a good thing!): 90/💯
Tik Tok sensation Tabitha Brown is bringing her soothing, southern vibes to a new app. The vegan influencer has partnered with the mental wellness app, Calm, to bring us “Slowing Down With Tabitha Brown,” a sleep story narrated and co-authored by her that subscribers can listen to at night to help them wind down. Brown’s diehard fans have been (frequently) requesting that Calm work with the viral star and now it looks like their dreams will soon be coming true! 💭
Thandiwe Newton corrects the spelling and pronunciation of her name: 70/💯
Famed British actress Thandiwe Newton wants y’all to put some respect on her name — her real name. The actress’s name has been misspelled for decades of her career, but now she’s reclaiming her birth name, Thandiwe, which means “beloved” in Zulu, and was given to her by her Zimbabwe-born mother.“That’s my name. It’s always been my name. I’m taking back what’s mine,” Newton told British Vogue. We’re happy she’s reclaiming her name but we’re side-eyeing the industry for messing up her name in the first place 😒
Pose season 3 trailer dropped and it’s giving us all the feels: 50/💯
We love Pose but we hate to see it go (hence the low ranking)! The trailer for the third and final season of FX’s groundbreaking series Pose dropped this week and its promising tears, drama, fashion and some really heartfelt moments. It’s so hard to say goodbye to this incredible cast. The category is: uncontrollably sobbing 😭
France attempts to enact a ban on hijabs: 🚮/💯
The French Senate has voted in favor of a proposed “Separatism Bill” that will outlaw wearing a hijab for women under 18, will prevent hijabi mothers from accompanying on school field trips and ban burkinis from public pools. These laws still need to be confirmed by the National Assembly but they really need to just throw the whole racist, sexist, anti-Muslim legislation in the trash. It’s a shame these laws and the harmful messages they carry have made it this far, smh.
