In Hot Pursuit of the Perfect Pound Cake

An ode to everybody’s favorite dessert.

Who knew so many people loved pound cake?

I stumbled upon this big fact when I recently confessed on social media to buying a frozen Sara Lee all-butter pound cake. There are apparently a whole lot of secret Sara Lee worshippers out there because not only did folks confess to buying them, but many of them gushed about their favorite ways to enjoy these old-school, tasty treats. We all agreed that they taste as good as the homemade version.

It was a bonding over memories of grandmothers and mothers always having one on hand “just in case company came over.” People from all walks of life chimed in on this favorite guilty pleasure, from non-foodie types and home cooks to self-described culinary connoisseurs and classically trained chefs. One chef even admitted to making his own seasonal fruit compote to drizzle over it.

Truth be told, the classic pound cake is one of the most underrated desserts. It’s plain as hell actually, but when topped with fresh berries and whipped cream or hot, thick caramel or a couple of scoops of ice cream, it’s transformed into something magical.
