I Believe Our Voices Have Value

That’s why I’ve lobbied so hard to create unique spaces for us

I have been covering the Black experience in America for decades. And it has been my unique privilege, and honor, to use whatever platform I have to uplift the stories by, for, and about Black women.

Living in this skin, I know all too well how often the voices of Black women are simply—brazenly—ignored. And I’ve had more than my share of run-ins with those who believe Black women should be silenced. So when I was given the opportunity three years ago to create a space where Black women could be seen and heard, I leapt at the chance. Medium provided that space.

However the keyboard calls you, I want you to know that your words matter. Which is why today I’m showcasing several platform writers who deserve your attention. You can read their thoughts here throughout the day today, but also support them on their own individual pages on Medium. This is how we keep the virtuous circle going; this is how we afford ourselves agency in times when too often no one else will. This is also how we ensure that we continue to have outlets for our creativity.

So now I have an ask: If you don’t already follow ZORA, please take a moment to do so here, and ask your family and friends to as well.

What are we missing? I’m interested in your suggestions and thoughts. Email us: zora@medium.com.
