For many people, a loc journey is about more than just the style. Some people go into their loc-ing process with specific intentions. Whether that be to finally commit to something in their life, to improve upon their spiritual journey, or challenge beauty standards and show the world an alternative way to look “professional.” Every stage of this process has the capacity to teach you something if you’re only willing and open to receiving it.

I’m four months loc’d now and this month's message has been all about taking chances.

Hair Jewelry

After stalking the Instagram explore page of loc’d women and their beautiful hair jewelry, I decided I could create something of my own. I already have my own bracelet company, so I figured I should be able to make hair jewelry too… and I did! I began to learn how to make gemstone jewelry using gems like citrine, opal, and chrysoprase.

They turned out wonderfully and were easy to install, but after a few days in them they started to link with my other locs and slowly pulled hair loose from the baby locs around them, adding to my frizz. I had to take the jewelry out for fear of weakening my locs. What started with good intention, ended up not being what my hair…
