The Sanctuary card by Ethony.

Where can you retreat to when the tides flowing are too much to bear? When you’re in desperate need of inner peace? Where is your safe space?

For me, it’s my altar space, which has changed many, many times over the years. When I think back throughout time, we’ve all been in the presence of an altar — a sacred space containing relics, prized possessions, candles, etc or a place we’ve crafted for ourselves to get a peace of mind. For many of us Black women it was our grandma or mother’s dresser holding their Bible (or other sacred texts), a candle, jewels they’ve committed to wearing each day, maybe a handheld mirror. For men, it may have been your dad’s garage, his cherished car, your grandfathers chair that no one else was allowed to sit in, in his presence.

Even with minimal resources or access to our own privacy, we’ve always found a way to create a place to retreat within our natural environment. There is a deep desire within us to feel safe and we associate those feelings with our environment. Spirit asks us this week to spend more time in that space, or create your own sanctuary as a personal oasis to clear your mind…
