Elizabeth Warren Can Make Amends With Native Americans — Here’s How

The presidential hopeful can do right by this group, and we should be willing to listen to her plans

SSenator Elizabeth Warren seized a golden opportunity to address Native Americans during the Native American forum that took place in Sioux City, Iowa, on August 19 and 20. Each Democratic presidential candidate was invited to appear before an all-Native panel composed of tribal leaders. They also took questions in a town hall setting, giving candidates a rare opportunity to exclusively address Native Americans on a national stage.

Sen. Warren was welcomed to the stage with a standing ovation and began by apologizing for causing damage to Native Americans by claiming Cherokee heritage with a DNA test and received a warm reception. Behind the scenes, things are complicated but not broken beyond repair.

Detailing policy does more than pay lip service, because now she can be held to account.

Sen. Warren recently rolled out policies specifically for Native American tribes and earned endorsement from Rep. Deb Haaland. This is a good move toward reconciliation, because it shows more effort than simple pandering. Detailing policy does more…
