Amazon Prime’s Swarm is a must-see for film noir lovers.
Swarm was the crazy tale I didn’t know I needed until I binged the entire series in a day. Usually, I try to watch stuff slower but it was so good that I could not help myself. Swarm is the Amazon Prime show created by Donald Glover that follows Dre, a twenty-something super “STAN” of a fictional Beyonce-like superstar named Nija. Dre is the superfan who will pull up to your front door if you talk about her beloved on social media. Dre will travel across the country to go to thousand-dollar concerts she can’t afford just itching for a taste — a whiff of Nija. Dre will kill for Nija even people she seems to love.
I like Noir films and dark comedies. There’s a specific grade of talent necessary that makes dark comedy and pulp fiction less horrific or traumatizing. If you have the stomach for it, you can watch this genre of film and television content and won’t miss any sleep later that night. Donald Glover and company nail it with Dre’s character played superbly by Dominique Fishback. She is so damn good in this role that it gives me chills. Dre is a character we have never, seen before and I am here for it.
