Dear Summer … Why Is It So Expensive To Be Outside Right Now?

I’ve run the numbers backward, forwards, and sideways but the math just ain’t mathing ya’ll. Why is everything so expensive this summer? From plane tickets to pedicures. Even the price of slushies and ice cream has gone up (looking at you 7–Eleven) and I feel a way about it.

Perhaps this was the case last summer too but this summer it just feels so blatant because I had plans. Plans to be outside. Rooftop parties, roller skating, overseas flights, wine festivals, vacations, amusement parks, concerts, cook-outs, summer parties in D.C., and weekly theater tickets until my bank account said different.

Last summer I was too busy adulting to make plans. I just started a new job, had to pay for a major car repair, and life was moving at full speed. Fun was the last thing on my mind.

I promised myself that summer 2023 would be different though. Oh yes, there would be fun and lots of it. I was intent on enjoying my fair share of summer shenanigans as long as I could be in bed by 10 p.m. I’m in my forties and I know my limitations. When it’s time to go to bed, it’s time to go to bed. Besides, I’m more of a day-party type of girl these days anyway.

So, again why is everything so expensive this summer? Am I the only one experiencing sticker shock? Inflation can’t be the sole…
