Caught Between Racism and Business
How’s an independent supposed to vote?

I don’t belong to either political party.
To participate in our political system, I have to pick between a party that sort of acknowledges our deep racial problems and is on some level trying to fix them, and the other party, which doesn’t really acknowledge them.
As a result, I usually bend to the Democrats.
So we’re clear, I don’t think the Democrats have great solutions for our racial problems. They don’t, and they’ve been missing the mark for quite some time now.
Transportation Security Pete Buttigieg is one of the first government officials to actually tackle an entire system of racism. The highway system.
But the GOP isn’t even trying.
In Republicans’ world, racism is an individual problem of the few. Unfair systems and structures don’t exist in their fantasy country. There’s no pervasive unequal treatment of Black men and women by our police and justice system. According to them, there is no lopsided, unjust application of rules in our society when it comes to race.
Just follow the rules and pull yourself up by the bootstraps, they say, and all will be fine.
In the newer GOP, they’ve even openly embraced people who are outwardly racist. Trump. DeSantis. You know the list.
That might be the end of the discussion, but as a lawyer representing small, medium, and large businesses for the last almost 30 years, I’ve seen firsthand that it’s not that simple.
The left-wing in this country of course is responsible for ending child labor, giving women the right to work and vote, reducing pollution from our factories, outlawing separate but equal, improving worker rights, passing the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1968, recognizing gay marriage, mandating family medical leave and so many more things we now take for granted.
